Fabergé and the last hours of Father Nicholas GibbesLeave a Comment
I refer you here to another blog – the brilliant ‘dovegreyreader’. I was alerted to this blogpost by Helen Rappaport (known to all as a historian of the Romanovs) on Facebook and it is a fascinating and moving account of the last hours of Father Nicholas Gibbes, formerly Charles Sydney Gibbes, tutor to the last Romanov Children.
Suffice to say, I was fascinated to read the following:
“In 1986, Gibbes’s adopted son George Paveliev Gibbes, sold off two of the most important Romanov pieces in his father’s collection made by Fabergé: a pair of monogrammed cufflinks given to Gibbes by the tsar’s eldest daughter, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, and a miniature gold Easter egg pendant with a diamond in the A note, that belonged to Anastasia. The latter was bought by film maker Steven Spielberg as a gift for his then wife, Amy Irving, when she finished filming at TV mini series starring as Anastasia.”
Readers of Olga’s Egg will know why…
