Today, 17th July 2018, marks the centenary of the death of the Romanovs, murdered by the Bolsheviks in the early hours of 17th July 1918.
From a young age I have been fascinated by the story of this family – so many elements make it remarkable, from Alexei’s haemophilia, to Rasputin, to the Revolution – but what has really made its impression over the years is the knowledge of how much they loved each other and how intimate they were as a family.
Mass commemorations are taking place right now in Ekaterinburg during the Tsar’s Days and it is quite incredible to see how post-Soviet Russia has reprised the memory of the Romanovs. Hopefully the Russian Orthodox Church will authenticate the remains of Alexei and Maria so that they can be buried with the rest of the family in St. Petersburg.
May they rest in peace.
